1944   Saülo Mercader was born in Alicante, Spain. He lives in the family house, called " Los Molinos" in San Vicente de l Raspeig, surrounded by    sculptures, paintings and Russian icones belonging to his father's collection. 

1949   He makes his first toys. Carves  in wood and stone  . He prepares a show of clay horses, ridden by the local gypsies who call him " The Wizard of Colour".      

 1950 -62    Separated from his father, he suffers a very cruel change in his way of life: without a proper home and deprived of the most elementary rights , he experiences humiliation and exploitation.  He finds his unique salvation in his deep faith in Art.

Works in a sculptor's  workshop in Alicante where he does engravings, wrought iron and casting  in aluminium and bronze.

Travels through Andalusia ( South of Spain) where he discovers  Murillo and the Seville School of Painting. He travels  to the Canary Isles and North Africa where he discovers  Brut Art and Primitive Art.

Frequent trips  through the province of Alicante. He works at making small statues and coloured papers; later, he is to be found working in the traditional and famous " Fallas" , big local fireworks celebrations at Midsummer Day, and as  a  goat pastor in the same province.

 1964   A decisive year in Saülo Mercader's career- his trip to  Vizcaya and his acquaintance with its people and   cultural traditions are very important  for him because he finds solidarity and help to set up there and produce his art. He feels Life is more just, creative and stronger, a great impact on his ocation.

    Intense studies in Anatomy and Drawing at the Achuri Art School in Bilba in Spain.

    Works as disciple of the sculptor Lucarini in Bilbao, Spain.

 1965-66   First trip to Catalunia where he is very impressed by the artistic and cultural atmosphere of Barcelona.

    At the same time, the Passionnist Fathers in Deusto( Bilbao-Spain) cede him a studio in the basement of their monastery in order to paint and  do sculptures.

    Saülo shows his works periodically at the monastery door. He realizes projects of frescoes and sculptures for the altar of the church and obtains the 2nd prize at the XII Bilbao Painting Contest.

1967   He locks himself up in his studio to dedicate all his time and life to Art , believing in Art as a sacred philosophy that fuses into the overall gift of the Spirit and Thought.

    A show of painting and Sculpture at the Spanish Arts and Crafts Association of Craftsmen.

    Ist prize at the XIII Show of Drawing and  Painting in Bilbao, Spain.

 1969   Participates in various exhibitions, visits and discussions in the "Grises"art gallery in Bilbao, Spain.

    A show at the Estio Salon, Baracaldo, Vizcaya, Spain 

1970   A new studio in one of the towers of the Passionnist Fathers' monastery in Deusto, Bilbao. A part of his production,  considered as provocative, is          burnt : the public is greatly affected to see him throw his paintings to the ground from the height of the tower.  He is suddenly famous . The medias speak about him, about his originality and his talent as an artist. He               becomes a " star".

    Saülo lives and  works in Rome in Tito's workshop at Piazza San Giovanni

    His painting " Pear in Spring" is bought by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid, Spain

    Trips to Italy, Germany and the Scandinavian countries.

 1973   Invited by the Marquis of Lozoya at his house in Segovia, Spain, where he paints the  Marquis posing on the " Balcony de las Parras"( " the grapevine balcony") that was made famous after the portrait was done. The portrait was related in different papers and art magazines.

    Prize of the Vocation Fund in Painting and Sculpture, Barcelona,Spain

 1974   Lives retired in a house-studio in a wood in Waldoreix-San- Cugat del Valles, near Barcelona. It is a place ceded to him by the Diogenes-Cortes family for a period of eight months' intense activity- tapestries, sculptures and engravings.

    He establishes contact with catalonian artistic circles. Group meetings at the "Portalon" in the Gothic area in Barcelona.

    Has a show together with Tarrats and Tapičs at the Acensor",Barcelona,Spain

    Invited by the historian Camon Aznar to the symposium on Architecture and Urbanism at the  famous Magdalena international University in Santander, Spain

    Show  at Goya art gallery in Madrid and at the B irreina Palace in Barcelona, Spain.

    Grant from the French Government: he is invited to work in the engraving workshop of   William Hayter, Paris. 

    The French Ministry of Cultural Affairs concedes  him a studio at the Cité Internationale des Arts in the historic and romantic district  of Le Marais, near Notre-Dame cathedral and important XVIIIth century buildings. The river Seine and its " bateaux-mouches", the Republican Guard marching on Sundays in their resplendant uniforms, plumed helmets and sword at side, mounted on  thorough bred horse, inspired Saülo very much. On the other hand, his confrontation with the harder and more realistic side of the city is captured in large oils on paper in the series of the " Tramps", solitary souls expressing all the mental misery that can be found in huge metropolis.

    At the Cité Internationale des Arts , Saülo lives with artists coming from more than a hundred  countries and this enriches his knowledge during encounters and talks.

    Prize and Grant from the Ministery of Foreign Affairs in Madrid,Spain

 1975   Important new phase in  his life :  he shows his paintings and sculptures in numerous artistic manifestations :

    The International Orly Airport,Paris - Cité des Arts , showing tapestries, paintings and red sculptures  -  Alexandra art Gallery in Nice - Paris Reception Center - Arts and Crafts Center - Foreign trade Center  -Le Raincy art gallery - Participation at Le Marais Annual Festival,Paris

    Show at the Spanish Embassy in Paris , a great success with the  public and the  press alike: the cultural administration takes down, on the opening day, several paintings considered as being provocative such as  the painting "Leda and the Yellow bird".

    Participates at the Europe  Festival in Antibes: he gets a prize and mention of the same City, France

    Guest at the Bienal of the Sports in Fine Arts, Barcelona, Spain

 1976   Gets a new studio at the Cité Internationale  des Arts in Paris. This studio in the heart of the old village of Montmartre close  to Moulin de la Galette allows him to experience a wonderful artistic atmosphere, surrounded by trees and birds.

    Exhibition at the Orly airport - Decostyle art gallery in Lochristi-Gand-  Belgium: this show is sponsored by the Spanish Embassy in Brussels - 

    Participation at the XXVII Young Sculpture Salon at  Espace Cardin in the Champs- Elysées in Paris

    Silver medal at the VIth international Salon of Belgian artists in the Fine Arts Palace in Charleroi,Belgium.

    Exhibits five paintings at the Takanawa Palace in Tokio,Japan.

 1977   Tapestry-sculpture works in wools and other recuperated materials with the yugoslavian artists Jagoda Buic and Ana Horvat . Shares tapestry workshop at the Cité des Arts with M. Varbanov: intense research in volumes, colours, various materials( metal, cotton, rags, plastic, cardbox etc...)in three-dimentional tapestries with sacral and cosmic themes, such as " Rotor III" and " the Fatija".

    Show at the Spanish cultural Center in Utrecht,The Netherlands .  A painting is acquired by the center.

    Show at the Arteta art gallery in Bilbao,Spain : an enormous success. The public and the press and very impressed by the artist's strong character and by his creations that are so original in their compositions and colours. It is an event hailed by the media as " historical" after five years away from Spain.

    The book " Saülo Mercader in Arteta gallery" is published and sponsored by the Vizcaya Savings Bank.

    One-man show at the F.I.A.C ( International  Contemporary Art Fair) at the Gran Palais in Paris,France.

 1979   In Düsseldorf,Germany, Saülo shows a considerable display of diverse                works :  paintings, sculptures, tapestries, drawings. Excellent press and public welcome.

    Show at the Spanish cultural center in Paris,France : a hundred paintings and drawings, gouaches, inks and tapestries, as well as red sculptures in honour to the United States of Europe.

    After a successful exhibition at the Im Kütscherhaus art gallery in Düsseldorf, Saülo returns to the French provinces  with a show at the Simone Boudet art gallery in Toulouse,France.

 1980   Five years in Paris, a lot of shows, an intense work covering all the facets of graphic and visual art...Time to pause. Saülo  writes pieces of poetry. he also writes his thoughts and ideas on Art, on his vocation and his creations      and he expresses his most intimate feelings about the various tendencies in Contemporary art and  on the universal events that influence his morale. Begins to write his analysis of the vinculation existing between the Cosmos and Art.

   Retrospective show on the theme of Vocation at the National institute of Popular Art in Marly-le-Roi near Paris: more than  two hundred paintings, tapestries, drawings,  sculptures and drawings are exhibited. A very impressive work commented by the press in the papers and on television.

 1981   Saülo exhibits in  Orly airport , Paris and at the Horizons art gallery in    Versailles,France

    Obtains the prestigious American Fulbright grant : he is invited to  live                and do research in New-York City. The Teachers'College at Columbia University opens up to him  its art workshops : paintings, ceramics, sculpture, litho.

    He is unanimously named President of the L.A.S.O ( latin-American intelectuals) As such, he invites various artists and scholars like the musician Brook Zern, film  and theatre actors to speak about their productions. He organizes talks and lectures related to Art, on the university campus.

    He is for a term counsellor to a curator at the Museo del Barrio.Intense work and research in the museums of New-York City.

 1982   Show at Macy Art gallery at Teachers'College, Columbia University, New-York. Various TV networks pick up his works - big canvasses such as " Brains", " Cosmicas" " Energetic archetipes" imspired by the megalopolis, its customs and its past .

   Show at the Intar art gallery in New-York City with large paintings based on the American football and - in exclusivity- some ceramics. This show is sponsored by the New-York State Art Council and the Spanish Ministry of  Foreigh Affairs. US television and press greeeted the event as one of the most important artistic happenings of the year ( " The Daily News", " Village Voice", " New-York Post" etc...)  Saülo is interviewed on TV channel 41 and channel 47.

    At the Teachers'College, he works in the art workshop on terracotta, clay and ceramics with the fruitful collaboration of Panay Reyes. He also does lithos on stone with professor Maxwell and shares an art studio at the Art                 Department with  Professor Schorr under Professor Mahoney's direction.

    He gets  a Master of Arts and Education   and Laurence Cremin, President of  Teachers' College,  acquires a large painting entitled " the Eight profiles".

    Saülo participates in numerous talks and lectures where he meets Andy Warhol, Lichenstein ,                       Cavallaro and Nicky de Saint Phalle.

    The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs invites him to represent Spain at the XIVth international Biennale of Contemporary Art in Alexandria,Egypt : for this purpose, he paints six large paintings based on the theme of the                International Tree, as a hymn of praise to the greatness of Nature.

 1983   Once more in Paris, he shows the works he has painted in New-York at the Meudon cultural center, near Paris ( formally Rodin' s residence). The show is entitled " New-York Now". It is a group of large-scale  paintings that includes " The American dream",  " The Look", " Manhattan Transfer" etc... all inspired by the Big Apple with its skyscrapers, its Indians , its crowd, its romantic areas like Greenwich Village and Chinatown. they arouse a great interest among the public, mostly the series based on American football for  their violent colours, compositions and volumes. The canvasses dedicated to the Indians stripped of their identity, too.

    The Spanish Embassy in Brussels sponsors Saülo's exhibition at the Lorelei art Gallery in Brussels: meeting with local artists such as E. Nardon and J.P. Koch. He continues writing his work of investigation about the influence of Cosmic Energy in Visual Art and particularly in his own artistical production.

    In Guernica( North of Spain), the artist is trapped by the floods that swept Vizcaya - his studio in Elorrieta is very badly damaged and hundred of paintings, drawings and sculptures as well as letters and valuable documents are lost. There were some exceptional photos and letters of the friendly links he maintained wityh other artists including Picasso  whose Saülo had paid a visit to in  his studio at " La Californie" in the South of France, thanks to the influence of several collectors from Barcelona.

    It is a very hard time for this very creative artist who lost 80% of his creation. Nothing is done by the local authorities, despite the outcry in the press and petitions written by various art-lovers.

    Participates at the XVIth International Contemporary Art Biennale in Valparaiso, Chili.

    Fall Salon in Paris - show in El Derrol, Spain, organized by ProArte group.

 1984   Exhibition at the Crédit Lyonnais Bank in Paris.

    Invited at the XIIth International Art Festival in Istanbul, Turkey- show at the Fine Arts State gallery in Taksim ( Istanbul) . Greatly acclaimed by the press ' " Eflatun" " Hürriet" " Bozkurt"  " Yeni Asir" etc..)

    Strong influence of the Oriental World in his works. During the festival, he meets a lot of artists such as Paco de Lucia, Habib Gerez,A. Orek .

    Exhibition in Bodrum ( ex-Halicarnasse) in the impressive castle of the knights of Rhodes. The Museum of Art and Submarine Archeology acquires one of his works.

    Invited to exhibit at the Atatürk Cultural center in Nicosia, Cyprus.  The state buys two paintings and the Turkish post office issues two  postage stamps representing the two paintings.

    Back to France, Saülo participates at the International  Day of Poetry with twelve drawings at the Marais Noir art gallery, Paris,France.

    Invited at the  IXth internacional Biennal of Contemporary Art in Mérignac, France.

    Obtains the diploma of In-Depth study in Visual Art at Paris VIII university.

    Saülo meets Bacon in his studio in London.

    Retrospective -Saülo Mercader : ten years' painting in Paris- at the"L'Oeil aux Aguets" gallery in Paris.

 1985   Special prize of the Jury at the Bienal of Sacred Art in the Abbey of Tournus,France, on the theme of " Tthe pilgrims to Santiago of Compostella".

    Group manifestations: "Arts in Yvelines" in the conservatory at the Palace of Versailles where he shows  his painting " Le Couple en bleu" unanimously chosen by the critics as representing a completly new form in Painting.

    Exhibition  at the Maison de la Radio in Paris and at Town Hall in the XVIth distric in  benefit of  Secours Catholique to help people in need.

 1986   Exhibition at the "L'Oeil de Boeuf" art gallery, Paris.

    Show at the Strafor Foundation, Paris

    Participates at the Xth Biennal in Bordeaux-Mérignac, France. Invited at the Festival of Contemporary Art in Clermont-Ferrand-Aulnat,France.

    Participates at the Salon Comparaisons and Figuration Critique at the Gran Palais, Paris and in the Hessenhuis, Anvers, Belgium.

    Receives the medal of " Chevalier in Arts and Letters" from J. Lang,   French Minister of Cultural Affairs.

    Silver Medal of the City of Paris - Mrs. Chirac acquires two paintings by Saülo.

    Invited by Frank Popper , professor at the University of Paris VIII, to give a  lecture  at the Museum of Modern Art  in order to express his ideas about the influences of cosmic energies on creativity and in his works in particular. Richard Fine ,  Biology teacher at Columbia University in New-york is invited to participate at the final debate on the same theme.

    He gets  the Doctor degree in Visual Arts at Paris VIII university.  His thesis is published on microfilms by the  Lille III university. It can be consulted in all the important universities throughout the world included the Casa Velasquez in Madrid.

1987-88   Travels to  North Africa.

    Exhibition at the Pivaut gallery in Nantes, France. A series of new paintings with anatomical deformations  and " starry" lights. Exhibition of " La    madone Cosmique" as well as two large-scaled tapestries.

    Exhibition at Manu gallery in Köln, Germany: shows to the public the " Couple series".

    Show at the international Orly airport in Paris.

    Trip to  Spain where he realizes a few portraits and murals.

    Show at the French Institute in Barcelona,Spain : " the Flying men" series.

1989   Returns to Alicante,Spain, his native town, after twenty years'leave.  Very successful show at the Juan de Juanes art galleru, organized by Arteta gallery (Bilbao)- great acclaim by the public and the national press which is highly enthusiastic about the show. It is even written that"  the  heart of Contemporary art lies among  Saülo's paintings".

    Show in Arteta gallery in Bilbao, Spain.

    An hommage to Van Gogh at the " L'Oeil de Boeuf" gallery in Paris

    Inaugaurates the Arte gallery in Bilbao,Spain. A series of engravings are done.

    His works are exhibited at the International Contemporary Art Fair in   Valencia, Spain

 1990   Saülo works on ceramics and clay. After a trip to Berlin, he returns to   Bilbao, invited by  Arte gallery to show with Miro, Picasso and Tapies.

    Back to Paris with two exhibitions : " Small paintings " at the " l'Oeil de Boeuf" gallery -  and Espinoza gallery, in Paris

    Prepares a series of paintings for the Miami Europe Art  Gallery, invited by the Florida art Department, USA                        

 1991   The Ministery of Youth and Sports invites Saülo to participate at an original and pedagogical programme called " Art at School", sponsored by the Paris Cultural Council: an itinerant exhibition all round the year in different schools and speeches.

    Saülo exhibits a large painting on the theme of Communication specially done for the Beaubourg Center at Expo-Langues International Show in Paris.

    Dedicates all his time to sculptures on terracotta, ceramics and bronze casting.

    Show at the Paris Festival where he is invited to show thirty paintings and  sculptures at the Fashion and Beauty Salon stand.

    The French magazine Artension publishes the cover and p8  on his works and he inaugurates a large-scale autobiographical exhibition in Arte gallery, Bilbao.

 1992   Second participation at " Art  at School" exhibition sponsored by the  French Ministry of Youth                  and Sports and by  Town Hall cultural Affairs, France.

    Saülo makes several speeches in different schools in Paris.

    Meets V. Adami, Alechinsky and J. Semprun.

    Retrospective exhibition at Elyette Peyre gallery in  Paris with his " green series" on the Bull and the Woman ( Eros and Thanatos theme).  french TV channel 2 speaks about this event and Georges Bégou says about Saülo that " he is one of the leaders in Contemporary Art in Europe"- wide echo in the press.

    Two shows in Spain : at Juan de Juanes galleryin Alicante and Orihuela: official presentation of his book, entitled : " saülo Mercader, Yo el Rey" by     Fernando Ponce, edited by Arteguia, Madrid. personalities and official representants of the Ministry of Culture are at the show. at  Sevilla, he participates at the World International Fair and at the 500th anniversary of the Commemoration of the Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. He exhibits a huge sculpture in  stone as an hommage to the Conquistador along with some paintings at the El Jalili gallery.

    The City of El Campello,Alicante, organizes an hommage to Saülo Mercader with the participation od Cerdan Tato, a History teacher, Espi Valdes, professor at  Alicante University as well as  the authorities from Madrid.

    Back to Paris, he offers a painting to the Exodus  humanitarian organization, which is sold at Drouot auction galleries, Paris, in order to build a music conservatory in Merom, Israël.

    Show at Europ'Art  International Fair in Geneva, Switzerland.

 1993   Publication of Saülo Mercader's book entitled: "Art, Matičre, Energie" by Imago ( PUF),                  France.

    Exhibition of  twenty gouaches and ink drawings at Elyette Peyre art gallery in Paris. The book is officially shown to the press and the public. Professor René Scherer ( Paris VIII university) writes that this book is "  The Bilble of Contemporary Art in Europe".  It deals with the notion of Energy as a whole and it is a synthesis of Saülo's practical work, of his travels and encounters round the world as well as his Theory on Sciences and Art Today.

    Exhibition at the Arteta gallery along with famous masters in Art, Madrid,Spain.

    Stays various months  in his studio to make ceramics, sculptures and oil paintings.

 1994   Exhibition sponsored by " Médecins sans frontičres" to help people in                Rwanda - El Campello,                       Sapin.

    In spite od repreated invitations to participate at important international art fairs such as FIAC or ARCO, he keeps refusing.

    Saülo has contacts with Australian Aborigenes that cause him to paint a series of paintings on the theme of Dream Time, on the Water and Earth themes.

    Exhibition of paintings and sculptures at the Paris Country-Club in Rueil-Malmaison,France.

    An important art collector buys " Le Mutant" a bronze sculpture of major importance.

    Several speeches in schools in Paris about " the function of  Art in the cities and its role as a witness of our times" .           

 1995   Exhibition of the series of paintings called " the Howlings of the Bull" at  Le Rire Bleu art gallery in Figeac,France, after being invited by a group of enthusiastic supporters such as G.Denizeau, P. Di Meglio and  S. Rolland.  They convince him to remain in France where his  presence in the artistic world is strongly needed. Saülo, after refusing to exhibit in an important art gallery in the Bastille district in Paris, had planned to leave for America.  The Spanish Embassador in Paris, D. Maximo Cajal, inaugurates this show which is greeted as " the most important artistical event in the year".

    Saülo paints one of his major paintings : " The Minotaurs' Bacchanale" which  is more than 7 meters  long and  nearly 3 meters wide.

    Saülo has an extraordinary contact with the Aborigenes in Australia.  He paints a series of paintings inspired  by mythical and holy places such as Uluru, Watarka, and the story of the Creation  of the World, called the Dream Time. Makes 70 paintings on the theme of Water, air, Fire, Earth and the  Human Being.                          

 1996   Exhibition at  Arte gallery in Leon,Spain.

    Stays a year in New-York where he realizes a series of paintings on the theme of the City, its prople and the solitude suffered by the human  biengs who live there.

    He is made   Member of Honour of the organism called "Save Latin-America", New-Jersey,USA

    The Museum of La Havana in exile acquires one of his paintings, in the latin-American centrum, New-jersey.

    Saülo writes his autobiography . It is  entitled " The Songs in the Shadow"- a tragedy of  a Spanish child -   Imago Publishers ( Paris-France)  withe a preface written by Yves Coppens .   The book is shown  at the International Book  Exhibition -Paris                        

 2001   Intensive work on the theme of the " Centaurs", sculptures.

    Does a series of conferences  about his autobiography : " The Songs in the Shadow" ( Imago Publishers-  Paris) related to the barbarous treatments of  children during Facism in Spain.

    His autobiography  has a great success in the Media : a lot of items in the specialized magazines ( Paris-Match, newspapers etc... including  French television, mostly the presentation on FR2 by Bernard Pivot in his   programme called:  " Bouillon de Culture" .

    Saülo paints the portrait of  the famous paleontologist Yves Coppens,   professor at the College de France.

    Loss of 30 paintings  in deposit  at  the Twin Towers in New-York City, during the hijack attack.
